While some accused Jesus of working with the devil, others demanded He prove Himself with an even bigger sign from heaven. No miracle was ever going to be enough for them.

The scholarly reading

Others demand a sēmeion ex ouranou (sign from heaven), seeking a cosmic-scale miracle as authentication. This reflects the expectation that true prophets would produce celestial signs as divine credentials.

Language and setting

The demand for heavenly signs echoes Israel's wilderness testing of God. While Jesus performed many miracles, these opponents wanted spectacular cosmic displays rather than the compassionate healings He offered.

Significance

Two groups challenge Jesus simultaneously: one claims His power is demonic, the other demands bigger proof. Both reveal hearts that have already decided not to believe.

15but some of them said, “It is by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons, that He drives out demons.”

18If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? After all, you say that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.
