Jesus says only one thing truly matters, and Mary found it. Her choice to sit with Him and listen won't be taken away. Busyness fades, but time with Jesus lasts forever.
Jesus isn't saying serving is bad. He's saying that when service crowds out actually being with Him, your priorities have gotten flipped. Presence comes before productivity.
Jesus lovingly affirms Mary's choice and gently invites Martha to see what she's been missing in all her busyness.
This is the punchline of the whole episode. The most important thing you can do isn't more activity for God -- it's being with God. Mary got that, and Jesus celebrates it.
The 'one thing necessary' (henos de estin chreia) points to attentive communion with Jesus as the supreme priority. Mary's 'good portion' (agathen merida) echoes Psalm 16:5 where God himself is the believer's inheritance.
The language of 'portion' (meris) carries Old Testament overtones of inheritance and divine allotment. Jesus declares that relationship with Him is the one thing that cannot be revoked.
Jesus concludes His response to Martha by affirming Mary's choice and establishing spiritual attentiveness as the highest priority.
Jesus gently redirects Martha from many things to the one thing. Mary's choice to sit and listen is not laziness but the deepest form of devotion, and it will never be taken from her.
40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!”
41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things.
42But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”
