What It Means

Luke 10:40, in plain English

Martha is overwhelmed with all the cooking and serving, and she's frustrated that Mary isn't helping. She goes straight to Jesus and basically says, 'Don't you even care that I'm doing everything alone?'

Martha isn't wrong to serve -- hospitality was a big deal. But her service has turned into stress, and now she's resentful instead of joyful.

The scholarly reading

Martha is periespato (pulled in every direction) by her serving. Her complaint uses ou melei soi (do You not care?), a surprisingly direct challenge to Jesus, and she demands He command Mary to help.

Language and setting

The Greek diakonia (service/preparations) is the root of 'deacon.' Martha's service was valuable but had become so consuming that it produced anxiety and resentment rather than joy.

Voice

Martha addresses Jesus directly with a complaint that reveals both her frustration with Mary and her own inner turmoil.

Significance

Martha's frustration boils over. She's doing all the work, Mary is sitting down, and she wants Jesus to take her side. Instead, she's about to receive a gentle correction.
