Why it's here

The priest was supposed to be the most godly person around. But he chose religious convenience over human compassion. Knowing God's law and living it are very different things.

A priest came by, the most religious person in Jewish society. He saw the bleeding man, crossed the road, and walked on. Religion without compassion is just performance.

The scholarly reading

Kata synkyrian ('by coincidence'), a hiereus ('priest') was descending the same road but idōn ('seeing') the victim, antiparēlthen ('passed by on the opposite side'). The priest's avoidance may reflect concerns about corpse impurity (Leviticus 21:1-3) that would disqualify him from temple service.

Language and setting

The priest, as a religious leader, represents the highest level of Jewish spiritual authority. His passing by creates the first twist in the parable: the most religiously qualified person fails to help. The detail 'by coincidence' emphasizes that this was not premeditated avoidance.

29But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30Jesus took up this question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.

31Now by chance a priest was going down the same road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32So too, when a Levite came to that spot and saw him, he passed by on the other side.

33But a Samaritan on a journey came upon him, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
