This heavenly dawn will shine on everyone sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death, and gently guide their feet onto the path of peace.
This beautiful conclusion echoes Isaiah's promise of light coming to people in deep darkness. It is a picture of hope for anyone who feels lost or afraid.
Zechariah closes his song with some of the most comforting words in all of Scripture.
If you have ever felt like you were stumbling in the dark, these words are for you. Zechariah promises that the Messiah will bring light to the darkest places and lead you gently toward peace.
The Dawn will shine (epiphanai) on those in darkness (skotei) and the shadow of death (skia thanatou), guiding feet into the path of peace (eirēnē). The language directly echoes Isaiah 9:2.
Skia thanatou ('shadow of death') recalls Psalm 23:4 and Isaiah 9:2. The 'path of peace' (hodos eirēnēs) envisions shalom—comprehensive well-being and restoration.
Zechariah concludes the prophetic section of the Benedictus with luminous imagery.
The Benedictus ends with a vision of light breaking into the deepest darkness. For those trapped in despair and death's shadow, the Messiah will illuminate a way forward into true peace.
77to give to His people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,
