What It Means

Luke 1:22, in plain English

When he finally comes out and can't speak to them, they realize he must have seen a vision. He keeps trying to communicate with hand signs but can't say a word.

Why it's here

Imagine the frustration. He has the most incredible news and can't tell anyone. All he can do is wave his hands and hope people understand something happened.

Who's speaking

Luke describes the crowd's realization and Zechariah's struggle.

Where it sits in the story

He comes out with the biggest news of his life and can't say a single word. Sometimes God's plans unfold in silence before they burst into the open.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

When Zechariah emerges unable to speak, the people recognize he has seen an optasia (vision) in the temple. He communicates through dianeuon (making signs/gestures) but remains kophos (mute).

Language and setting

The people's immediate inference of a vision shows that such experiences, while rare, were within the cultural framework of temple worship expectations.

Voice

The narrator describes the crowd's realization and Zechariah's inability to communicate.

Significance

Zechariah's muteness confirms to the congregation that something divine has occurred. He can only gesture, unable to share the extraordinary news of what he has experienced.

In context

22When he came out and was unable to speak to them, they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.

23And when the days of his service were complete, he returned home.

24After these days, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. She declared,
