This is staggering. Joshua might be thinking about the people he can see across the Jordan, but God is telling him the borders of his inheritance stretch far beyond what he can currently imagine. It's both a promise and a vision of what's ahead.

This is the largest territorial promise God has made so far. It connects to the Abrahamic covenant and shows that God's vision for His people is far bigger than they might have imagined standing on the riverbank.

The scholarly reading

God defines Israel's territorial borders: from the southern wilderness through Lebanon northward, eastward to the Euphrates, and westward to the Mediterranean Sea—encompassing all Hittite territories.

Language and setting

This is the most expansive definition of Israel's borders in the Bible, far exceeding what Israel actually controls even at the height of Solomon's reign. The boundaries encompass the entire Levantine corridor—from Egypt's border in the south, through Canaan proper, to Syria in the north. Mentioning the 'Hittites' may reference the Hittite Empire's former sphere of influence or the Hittite peoples still inhabiting parts of Canaan and Syria. This grand vision establishes Israel's ideological claim to the entire region, even if the historical reality falls short.

Significance

This represents the fullest extent of the land promise made to Abraham. While Joshua's generation will conquer only Canaan proper, and later generations will claim only portions of this territory, God establishes here the theological maximalism of Israel's covenantal entitlement—a claim later referenced during the reigns of David and Solomon.

2“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise, you and all these people, and cross over the Jordan into the land that I am giving to the children of Israel.

3I have given you every place where the sole of your foot will tread, just as I promised to Moses.

4Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and Lebanon to the great River Euphrates—all the land of the Hittites—and west as far as the Great Sea.

5No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.

6Be strong and courageous, for you shall give these people the inheritance of the land that I swore to their fathers I would give them.
