Language and setting

Moses' death removes the last living link to the exodus miracle. The people need authoritative direction to overcome fear and inertia. God's imperative—'arise' (קום, qum in Hebrew, emphasizing active uprising and readiness)—signals that delay is no longer permissible; the moment of inheritance has arrived. The land is described as something God is 'giving' (נתן, natan), not something Israel must conquer by their own strength, establishing the theological framework that undergirds the entire campaign.

Significance

This fulfills the promise God made to Abraham (Genesis 12:7) and renewed to Moses at Mount Sinai. The crossing of the Jordan parallels the crossing of the Red Sea—both are boundary transitions marked by divine intervention, both separate the old generation from the new.

1Now after the death of His servant Moses, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying,

2“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise, you and all these people, and cross over the Jordan into the land that I am giving to the children of Israel.

3I have given you every place where the sole of your foot will tread, just as I promised to Moses.

4Your territory shall extend from the wilderness and Lebanon to the great River Euphrates—all the land of the Hittites—and west as far as the Great Sea.
