“Abraham is our father,” they replied. John 8:39 · Berean Standard Bible
They insist Abraham is their father. Jesus replies: If that were true, you would act like Abraham did. Abraham trusted God. You are trying to kill God's messenger.
Jesus is showing them that real family resemblance is about character, not genetics. Abraham's true children look like Abraham.
Jesus challenges their understanding of what it means to be Abraham's children.
Claiming Abraham as your father while rejecting everything Abraham stood for is a contradiction. Abraham welcomed God's messengers. His descendants are trying to murder one.
The audience claims Abraham as their father. Jesus counters: if they were truly Abraham's children (tekna), they would do Abraham's works (erga), applying the principle that genuine descent is demonstrated by character, not genealogy.
Jesus distinguishes between sperma (biological seed, conceded in v. 37) and tekna (children in the relational/spiritual sense). True children resemble their father in character and deeds.
The audience reasserts their Abrahamic heritage, and Jesus challenges the meaning of true spiritual kinship.
Jesus redefines family. Being Abraham's child is not about DNA but about character. Abraham believed God and obeyed. His so-called descendants are rejecting God's messenger and plotting murder. They look nothing like their father.
37I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you.
38I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
39“Abraham is our father,” they replied.
40But now you are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
41You are doing the works of your father.”
