Nicodemus, the Pharisee who had visited Jesus at night, speaks up. He is one of them, and he is brave enough to push back.
Remember Nicodemus from chapter 3? He came to Jesus secretly at night. Now he is finding the courage to speak up for Jesus in broad daylight.
The Gospel writer reintroduces Nicodemus at a critical moment.
Faith often grows slowly. Nicodemus started with a secret nighttime visit. Now he is defending Jesus in front of his peers. His courage is growing, even if it is not complete yet.
Nicodemus, identified as the one who had previously come to Jesus by night (pros auton proteron) and as one of their own group (heis ōn ex autōn), intervenes, providing an insider challenge to the Pharisees' dismissal.
This is Nicodemus' second appearance in John's Gospel (after 3:1-21), showing his progression from secret nighttime inquirer to public defender, a trajectory completed at Jesus' burial (19:39).
The narrator reintroduces Nicodemus, a Pharisee sympathetic to Jesus, who now speaks up within the council.
A voice of reason emerges from within the hostile council. Nicodemus, who once came to Jesus under cover of darkness, now takes a small but significant step into the light by challenging his colleagues.
48“Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him?
49But this crowd that does not know the law—they are under a curse.”
50Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who himself was one of them, asked,
51“Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him to determine what he has done?”
52“Aren’t you also from Galilee?” they replied. “Look into it, and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”
