The scholarly reading

The narrator summarizes: schisma (division/split) arose in the crowd because of Jesus, a characteristic Johannine theme where Jesus' presence forces a separation between belief and unbelief.

Language and setting

The term schisma appears three times in John (7:43; 9:16; 10:19), always caused by Jesus' words or works. He does not bring neutral presence but forces decision, fulfilling Simeon's prophecy of a sign of contradiction (Luke 2:34).

Significance

Jesus does not allow neutrality. His presence creates a schism, a forced choice between faith and rejection. The crowd cannot agree because Jesus demands a response that splits every room He enters.
