The skeptics quote Scripture correctly: the Messiah should come from David's family and from Bethlehem. What they do not know is that Jesus fulfills both of these prophecies perfectly.
This is one of the greatest ironies in the entire Bible. The very evidence that proves Jesus is the Messiah is being used to reject Him.
Members of the crowd appeal to Scripture to make their case against Jesus.
They had the right answer in their hands and did not know it. Jesus was from David's line. Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Every objection they raised was actually proof that He was the one they were waiting for.
The objectors cite Scripture accurately: the Christ must come from David's line (sperma Dauid) and from Bethlehem (Bēthleem), the village of David, quoting Micah 5:2 and 2 Samuel 7:12-16.
The supreme irony of John's Gospel: the crowd uses exactly the right Scripture to disqualify Jesus, not knowing that He actually fulfills it perfectly. John expects his readers to recognize the dramatic irony without spelling it out.
The crowd cites prophetic Scripture about the Messiah's origin, unaware that Jesus actually fulfills these very prophecies.
They have the right Bible verses but the wrong conclusion. The prophecies they cite about Bethlehem and David's line describe Jesus perfectly, but their ignorance of His birth story turns their best evidence into a stumbling block.
40On hearing these words, some of the people said, “This is truly the Prophet.”
