John 7:34, in plain English

Jesus adds something mysterious: You will look for Me but will not find Me. Where I am going, you cannot come. He is pointing to a reality they cannot yet understand.

The scholarly reading

Jesus tells them they will seek Him but not find Him, and that where He is going, they cannot come, using deliberate ambiguity that points to His return to the Father's presence, inaccessible to unbelievers.

Language and setting

This saying anticipates the farewell discourse (14:1-6) where Jesus tells the disciples they know the way to where He is going. The inability to follow is a consequence of unbelief, not geographical impossibility.

Jesus continues His cryptic prophecy, creating a saying that will echo through the rest of the Gospel.

Significance

Jesus speaks of a destination His opponents cannot reach. They will search for Him in vain because the place He is going, the Father's presence, is closed to those who reject the only way there.

33So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me.
