John 7:33, in plain English

With guards on the way to arrest Him, Jesus calmly says: I am with you only a little while longer, and then I am going to the One who sent Me. He is not afraid; He is in charge.

Facing imminent arrest, Jesus speaks cryptically about being with them eti chronon mikron (a little while longer) before returning to the One who sent Him, veiling His passion and ascension in mysterious language.

Language and setting

Jesus' statement operates on two levels: the immediate audience hears geographical mystery, but the reader understands a reference to His death, resurrection, and ascension to the Father.

Significance

With officers coming to arrest Him, Jesus speaks not of escape but of departure. He is leaving on His own terms, going back to the Father. The arrest cannot happen until He is ready.
