John 7:29, in plain English

Jesus says: But I know Him, because I come from Him and He sent Me. While they argue about His origins, Jesus declares the truth with total certainty.

Why it's here

This is the ultimate credential. Jesus does not know about God secondhand. He knows God from being with Him before time began.

Jesus speaks with the authority of someone who has been in the very presence of God.

Where it sits in the story

When Jesus says He knows the Father, it is not the way you or I would say it. He knows the Father the way a son knows his dad, from a lifetime, an eternity, of being together.

The scholarly reading

Jesus declares His intimate knowledge of the Father on the basis of His origin: He is from (par' autou) the Father, and the Father sent (apesteilen) Him, establishing the mission as proof of the relationship.

Language and setting

The preposition para with the genitive (from alongside) indicates not just divine sending but essential origin from the Father's side, reinforcing the pre-existence theme of the Prologue (1:1-2).

Voice

Jesus continues His temple declaration, asserting His unique knowledge of the Father based on His unique origin from the Father.

Significance

The claim is absolute: Jesus knows God because He comes from God. Not as a prophet inspired from a distance, but as one who was at the Father's side before the world began.

27But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.”

28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “You know Me, and you know where I am from. I have not come of My own accord, but He who sent Me is true. You do not know Him,

29but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”

30So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

31Many in the crowd, however, believed in Him and said, “When the Christ comes, will He perform more signs than this man?”
