What It Means

John 7:28, in plain English

Jesus raises His voice in the temple: Yes, you know Me and where I am from. But I did not come on My own. The One who sent Me is real, and you do not know Him.

This is one of those moments where Jesus draws a line. He confronts their confidence with a truth they do not want to hear: they do not actually know God.

The scholarly reading

Jesus cries out (ekraxen) in the temple, conceding they know Him and His earthly origin but asserting He has not come on His own authority (ap' emautou ouk elēlutha), and that the One who sent Him is alēthinos (true/genuine) but unknown to them.

Language and setting

The verb krazō (to cry out) indicates a solemn, prophetic proclamation. Jesus' response contains sharp irony: they know Him superficially but are ignorant of the God they claim to worship.

Voice

Jesus responds with a loud, prophetic declaration in the temple courts, confronting the crowd's claim to knowledge with the reality of their ignorance.

Significance

Jesus does not whisper His response. He cries it out in the temple for all to hear. Yes, you know Me and where I am from, but you do not know the God who sent Me. The indictment is shattering.
