The scholarly reading

Jesus introduces the concept of mutual indwelling (menei en emoi kagō en autō): the one who feeds on His flesh and drinks His blood abides in Him and He in that person, anticipating the Vine discourse of John 15.

Language and setting

The menō (abide/remain) language is central to Johannine theology, describing the intimate, ongoing union between believer and Christ that is the essence of eternal life.
