The Ioudaioi (Jewish leaders or Judean crowd) begin to gogguzo (grumble/murmur), a term echoing Israel's wilderness murmuring, in response to Jesus' claim of heavenly descent.

Language and setting

The verb gogguzo deliberately recalls the Septuagint's description of Israel's murmuring against Moses in Exodus 16, creating a typological parallel between the manna rebellion and this rejection of the true bread.

The narrator reports the crowd's reaction, transitioning from Jesus' teaching to the audience's hostile response.

Significance

Just as their ancestors grumbled against Moses when given manna, these listeners grumble against Jesus when He claims to be the bread from heaven. The pattern of unbelief repeats across generations.
