John 6:25

The Bread of Life

When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?” John 6:25 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

John 6:25, in plain English

When they found Jesus on the other side of the lake, they asked, 'Rabbi, when did You get here?' They were curious about the how, not the who.

Why it's here

They are asking about travel logistics when they should be asking about identity. Jesus is about to shift the conversation to what really matters.

Who's speaking

The crowd asks a surface-level question, giving Jesus the opening to take the conversation much, much deeper.

Where it sits in the story

They found Him, but they are asking the wrong question. Jesus does not answer their question about timing. Instead, He answers the question they should be asking: why are you really looking for Me?

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

Finding Jesus on the other side, the crowd asks 'Rabbi, when did You get here?' (pote hōde gegonas). Their question reveals curiosity about the logistics of His arrival rather than its theological significance.

Language and setting

The title 'Rabbi' indicates respect but falls short of the deeper recognition Jesus seeks. Their question about timing misses the more important question of identity that Jesus' miraculous crossing should have raised.

Voice

The crowd addresses Jesus as Rabbi and asks a practical question that inadvertently touches on the supernatural nature of His crossing.

Significance

The crowd finds Jesus and asks the wrong question. They want to know when He arrived, not who He is. Jesus will redirect their curiosity from the miraculous logistics to the spiritual reality.

In context

John 6:23–27

23However, some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

24So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him.

25When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”

26Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

27Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”

Read all of John 6 — Jesus feeds five thousand, walks on water, and then makes a claim so shocking that many of his followers abandon him on the spot.
