When the crowd realized Jesus and His disciples were gone, they got in the boats and went to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

Following Jesus is easy when you are full. The real question is whether you would still follow Him if He offered you truth instead of bread. That test is coming.

The scholarly reading

The crowd takes the available boats to Capernaum 'seeking Jesus' (zētountes ton Iēsoun). Their pursuit is motivated by the previous day's miracle, but their seeking, as Jesus will soon reveal, is superficial.

Language and setting

The verb zēteō ('to seek') in John often carries ironic undertones. The crowd seeks Jesus, but their seeking is for the wrong reasons (bread rather than belief), as Jesus will expose in verse 26.

Voice

The narrator describes the crowd's pursuit of Jesus to Capernaum, framing their quest as a search motivated by the feeding miracle.

Significance

The crowd crosses the lake to find Jesus, driven by yesterday's miracle. They are seeking Him, but for the wrong reasons. Jesus will soon challenge them to examine the true motivation behind their pursuit.

22The next day, the crowd that had remained on the other side of the sea realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not boarded it with His disciples, but they had gone away alone.

23However, some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

24So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him.

25When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they asked Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”

26Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
