Jesus perceives (gnous) that the crowd intends to seize Him (harpazein, 'to snatch/take by force') and make Him king. He withdraws (anechōrēsen) to the mountain alone. This forced enthronement reflects messianic political expectations that Jesus consistently rejects.

Language and setting

The crowd's attempt reflects the widespread Jewish expectation of a political-military Messiah who would overthrow Roman rule. Jesus' withdrawal demonstrates that His kingdom is not of this world (18:36) and cannot be established by human force.
