The scholarly reading

The crowd identifies Jesus as 'the Prophet who is to come into the world' (ho prophētēs ho erchomenos eis ton kosmon), referencing the Mosaic prophet of Deuteronomy 18:15. The connection between miraculous bread and Moses' manna makes this identification natural.

Language and setting

The crowd correctly identifies Jesus within the prophetic framework but will immediately misapply this recognition by attempting to make Him a political king (v.15). Right identification with wrong application is a persistent danger in the Gospel.

The crowd makes a collective theological declaration, identifying Jesus as the promised prophet like Moses based on the miraculous feeding.

Significance

The crowd puts the pieces together: Moses gave bread in the wilderness, and now this man has given bread on a mountainside. He must be the prophet Moses promised. They are right about who He is but about to be wrong about what that means.
