This is a massive statement. The final word on every human life does not come from an abstract force; it comes from Jesus, the same person who sat by the well and offered living water.

Jesus reveals His role as the ultimate judge of all humanity, a role entrusted to Him by the Father.

Where it sits in the story

The same Jesus who showed compassion to a Samaritan woman and healed a paralyzed man is also the one who holds the authority to judge every person who has ever lived. Both His mercy and His authority are absolute.

The scholarly reading

The Father has delegated 'all judgment' (tēn krisin pasan) to the Son. The verb dedōken ('has given,' perfect tense) indicates a completed transfer of judicial authority. This is the second divine prerogative (after life-giving) assigned to Jesus.

Language and setting

In the Old Testament, God alone is the ultimate judge (Genesis 18:25; Psalm 96:13). The transfer of this role to the Son fulfills the Daniel 7:13-14 vision where the Son of Man receives authority to rule and judge.

Significance

Not only does Jesus give life; He also judges. The Father has handed over the entire scope of divine judgment to the Son, making Jesus the one before whom every person will ultimately stand.

24Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life.
