The scholarly reading

The Son gives life (zōopoiei) to whom He wishes (hous thelei), just as the Father raises the dead. The verb zōopoieō ('to make alive/give life') is a divine prerogative, and Jesus' claim to exercise it at His own discretion (thelei) is a claim to divine sovereignty.

Language and setting

In Jewish theology, the power to raise the dead was exclusively God's (Deuteronomy 32:39; 1 Samuel 2:6; 2 Kings 5:7). Jesus' claim to share this power reinforces the equality with God that the authorities have just accused Him of claiming.

Jesus declares His authority to give life, a power reserved for God alone, thereby confirming the very claim His opponents found blasphemous.

Significance
