This parenthetical note explains Jesus' solitude at the well by noting His disciples had gone to purchase food (trophēn). Their willingness to buy food in a Samaritan town suggests some degree of pragmatic flexibility.

Language and setting

The disciples' absence is narratively essential: it creates the private setting for Jesus' intimate conversation with the woman and sets up the contrast when they return in verse 27.
