The scholarly reading

Paradoxically, the Galileans welcome Jesus, but their reception is based on having witnessed His signs (sēmeia) at the Jerusalem feast, not on genuine faith. John distinguishes between sign-based amazement and true belief throughout his Gospel.

Language and setting

This reception contrasts sharply with the Samaritans' faith, which was based on Jesus' word (4:41-42). The Galileans' welcome, while warm, is theologically superficial by Johannine standards.
