The Woman at the Well
They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.” John 4:42 · Berean Standard Bible
The townspeople tell the woman, 'We believe now not because of what you said, but because we have heard Him ourselves. We know He truly is the Savior of the world.'
These are not Jews or religious scholars making this declaration. They are Samaritans, outsiders who recognized what many insiders missed: Jesus is for everyone.
The townspeople speak with confident, personal conviction, declaring the most universal title for Jesus found anywhere in the Gospels.
From one conversation at a well, an entire community has come to the deepest possible conclusion: this man is not just a prophet or a teacher. He is the Savior of the whole world. And they figured it out before most of Israel did.
The Samaritans' declaration that Jesus is 'the Savior of the world' (ho sōtēr tou kosmou) is one of the highest Christological titles in John's Gospel. Remarkably, this universal title comes from Samaritans, not Jews, underscoring the irony that outsiders recognize what insiders miss.

The outsiders see what the insiders have missed. These Samaritans, despised by the Jewish establishment, become the first in the Gospel to proclaim Jesus as Savior not just of Israel but of the entire world.
40So when the Samaritans came to Him, they asked Him to stay with them, and He stayed two days.
41And many more believed because of His message.
42They said to the woman, “We now believe not only because of your words; we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man truly is the Savior of the world.”
43After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.
44Now He Himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.
