The disciples are confused, asking each other, 'Did someone bring Him food while we were gone?' They are taking His words literally, just like the woman did earlier.
It is the same pattern: Jesus speaks about spiritual realities using everyday language, and people think He is talking about physical things.
The disciples speak among themselves, trying to figure out what Jesus means, not yet seeing the deeper truth.
They are looking around for a takeout container while Jesus is talking about something so much bigger. It is a gentle reminder that the most important things in life are not always the most obvious.
The disciples' confusion (mē tis ēnegken autō phagein, 'Could someone have brought Him food?') demonstrates the same literalistic misunderstanding seen in the Samaritan woman and Nicodemus, creating a recurring pattern in John's narrative technique.
Their question, using the particle mē (expecting a negative answer), shows they suspect no one brought food but cannot understand Jesus' words. This sets up Jesus' explanatory teaching in the following verses.
