She has gone from surprise to curiosity to wonder, and now she is expressing her deepest hope. The Messiah she has been waiting for is sitting right in front of her.

Where it sits in the story

This is one of the most dramatic moments in all of Scripture. She speaks her hope out loud, not knowing that the very person she is hoping for is the one listening to her words.

The scholarly reading

The woman reveals her messianic expectation, using the Samaritan concept of the Taheb ('Messiah,' here glossed as Christos for the Greek reader). She believes the coming one will 'explain everything' (anangellei hēmin hapanta), reflecting the Samaritan expectation of a prophetic revealer rather than a Davidic king.

Language and setting

The Samaritan messianic hope was rooted in Deuteronomy 18:15-18, expecting a prophet like Moses who would restore true worship and reveal all truth. This expectation differed from the Jewish hope for a royal Davidic Messiah.

The Samaritan woman articulates her messianic hope, unknowingly setting up the most direct messianic self-revelation in the Gospels.

Significance

The woman has been led step by step from curiosity to conviction. Now she voices her deepest hope: the Messiah is coming, and He will make everything clear. She does not yet realize she is sitting across from Him.

23But a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.

25The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.”

26Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”

27Just then His disciples returned and were surprised that He was speaking with a woman. But no one asked Him, “What do You want from her?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
