The woman's recognition of Jesus as a 'prophet' (prophētēn) marks a significant shift in her perception, moving from 'Jew' (v.9) to 'Sir' (v.11) to 'prophet.' She correctly perceives that supernatural knowledge indicates prophetic authority.

Language and setting

In Samaritan theology, the expected prophet was the Taheb (the 'restorer'), based on Deuteronomy 18:15-18's promise of a prophet like Moses. Her identification of Jesus as a prophet is the first step toward recognizing Him as the Messiah.
