The Woman at the Well
The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” John 4:15 · Berean Standard Bible
The woman says, 'Sir, give me this water so I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here!' She still thinks Jesus is talking about physical water, but her heart is open.
She does not fully understand yet, but she wants what Jesus is offering. Sometimes that is all it takes: a willingness to say 'yes' even before you fully understand.
The woman asks eagerly for what Jesus is offering, revealing a heart that is ready to receive even though her mind has not caught up yet.
There is something beautiful about her eagerness. She may not understand the full picture, but she wants what Jesus has. And Jesus is about to take her from surface-level desire to soul-level transformation.
The woman's request reveals she still interprets Jesus' words physically, desiring water that eliminates her daily labor of drawing from the well. Yet her openness (dos moi, 'give me') shows a willingness to receive, even if she does not fully understand.
Her misunderstanding parallels the crowd's request for perpetual bread in John 6:34. In both cases, physical desire becomes the bridge to spiritual revelation.
The Samaritan woman responds eagerly but still on a literal level, asking for this water so she will not have to make the daily trip to the well.
The woman's request is practical but her openness is genuine. She wants what Jesus is offering, even though she does not yet understand its true nature. Jesus will now redirect the conversation to reveal her deeper need.
13Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.
14But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
15The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I will not get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17“I have no husband,” the woman replied.
