John identifies this as the first of Jesus' signs (Greek: archēn tōn sēmeiōn, 'the beginning of signs') at Cana, through which He revealed His glory (doxan) and His disciples believed in Him.

John uses sēmeion ('sign') rather than the Synoptic dynamis ('mighty work') — signs in John point beyond themselves to deeper theological realities. This first sign reveals Jesus' glory as the incarnate Logos (cf. 1:14).
