The burial was rushed by necessity, not by carelessness. They did what they could before sundown. But Sunday morning was coming—and with it, everything would change.

As the sun sets on the darkest Friday in history, Jesus' body is placed in a borrowed tomb. The Sabbath begins. Everything is still. But this story is far from over.
Due to the urgency of the approaching Sabbath and the tomb's convenient proximity, Joseph and Nicodemus place Jesus' body there.
The 'day of Preparation' required burial before sunset when the Sabbath began. The proximity of the tomb was providential—there was no time for a more elaborate arrangement. This detail also explains why the women returned on Sunday to complete the burial rites.
