John 15:5, in plain English

Jesus says: I am the vine, you are the branches. If you stay in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. But apart from Me, you can do nothing.

Why it's here

This is both humbling and freeing. You are not meant to produce fruit through your own effort. You are meant to stay connected and let the life of Christ flow through you.

Jesus draws the sharpest possible contrast between abiding and separation.

Where it sits in the story

Apart from Jesus, the answer is nothing. Not 'a little less,' not 'struggling along,' but nothing of eternal value. But the flip side is the most encouraging news imaginable: stay connected, and you will bear more fruit than you ever thought possible.

The scholarly reading

Jesus restates the vine metaphor with a striking contrast: the one who abides bears 'much fruit' (karpon polyn), while apart from Him they can do 'nothing' (ouden). The absolute 'nothing' underscores total dependence.

Language and setting

The 'nothing' (ouden) is comprehensive: not merely reduced effectiveness but zero spiritual productivity apart from Christ. This is one of the strongest statements of dependence in the New Testament.

Jesus declares the absolute necessity of remaining in Him for any spiritual productivity.

Significance

Jesus states the principle with maximum clarity: abiding produces abundance; separation produces nothing. The contrast is absolute. The most gifted disciple, apart from Christ, achieves precisely zero of eternal value. But connected to the vine, even the smallest branch bears much fruit.

3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

4Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.

5I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.

6If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned.

7If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
