John 14:9, in plain English

Jesus says gently, 'Philip, I've been with you all this time, and you still don't know Me? When you see Me, you see the Father.' The God Philip is looking for is standing right in front of him.

Why it's here

There is a gentle sadness in Jesus' words. He has been revealing the Father through every word and deed for years. Philip has seen it all and still wants something more. Sometimes we overlook the miracle standing right in front of us.

Where it sits in the story

Philip has been walking with God-in-the-flesh for three years and still asks to see God. Jesus' response is not anger but loving bewilderment. 'Philip, what have you been looking at?' The greatest revelation of God is not in the clouds; it is in the carpenter from Nazareth.

The scholarly reading

Jesus expresses gentle astonishment that Philip, after such prolonged companionship (tosoutō chronō), still does not recognize the Father in Him. 'Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father' is the definitive Johannine incarnational claim.

Language and setting

This verse is the climactic answer to Philip's request and echoes John 1:18 ('No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son has made Him known'). The incarnation is the theophany Philip seeks.

Significance

Jesus' response to Philip is tender but pointed: 'I have been with you all this time, and still you don't know Me?' The theophany Philip seeks has been unfolding before his eyes every day for three years. To see Jesus is to see the Father; there is no separate vision to be had.

7If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well. From now on you do know Him and have seen Him.”

8Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

9Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works.

11Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me—or at least believe on account of the works themselves.
