John 14:10, in plain English

Jesus asks Philip: don't you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? My words come from Him, and His works flow through Me. We are completely united.

Why it's here

Jesus is trying to help Philip see what should have been obvious all along: everything Jesus says and does is God at work. His words are God's words; His miracles are God's miracles.

Where it sits in the story

Jesus gives Philip the clearest explanation possible: everything you've heard Me say? That's the Father talking. Everything you've seen Me do? That's the Father working. We are so deeply united that you cannot separate us. Seeing one is seeing both.

The scholarly reading

Jesus points to two forms of evidence for His unity with the Father: His words (rhēmata), which originate from the Father, and the Father's works (erga) performed through Him. The mutual indwelling ('I in the Father, the Father in Me') is the theological foundation.

Language and setting

The mutual indwelling language (perichoresis in later theology) describes the intimate interpenetration of Father and Son. Jesus' words and works are the visible proof of this invisible union.

Significance

Jesus offers Philip concrete evidence: His words are not His own but the Father's, and the works He performs are the Father's works flowing through Him. The union between Father and Son is so complete that Jesus' teaching and miracles are direct manifestations of God Himself.

8Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

9Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works.

11Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me—or at least believe on account of the works themselves.

12Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I am doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
