John 14:31, in plain English

Jesus says He does exactly what the Father has commanded, so the world will know He loves the Father. Then He says: 'Get up. Let's go.' He is walking toward the cross on purpose.

Why it's here

This is not a victim being dragged to execution. This is a Son who loves His Father enough to do the hardest thing imaginable. And He does it willingly, decisively, with 'let's go' on His lips.

The conversation is over. Jesus rises to His feet. 'Let's go,' He says. He is not running from anything; He is walking toward it. The cross ahead is the Father's plan, and Jesus embraces it because He loves the Father and He loves you.

The scholarly reading

Jesus goes to the cross in obedience to the Father's command, demonstrating His love for the Father. The closing imperative, 'Get up! Let us go!' (egeiresthe, agōmen), signals the move toward Gethsemane and the passion.

Language and setting

The command to arise marks a transition in the narrative. Some scholars suggest chapters 15-17 were spoken en route to Gethsemane. Jesus' obedience to the Father's command is the ultimate demonstration of filial love.

Significance
