Jesus is thinking ahead, not just to the cross, but to His disciples' hearts afterward. He gives them advance warning so that when the worst happens, they can say: He told us this would happen. He knew. He is still in control.

The scholarly reading

Jesus provides advance revelation (proeirēka) so that when events unfold, the disciples' faith will be strengthened rather than destroyed. Predictive prophecy serves an apologetic and pastoral function.

Language and setting

This mirrors John 13:19 and 16:4. Jesus consistently uses foreknowledge as a tool for building faith. The events of the passion will test the disciples, but Jesus' predictions will anchor them.
