John 14:19, in plain English

Jesus says: soon the world won't see Me anymore, but you will. And because I live, you will live too. His life is the guarantee of yours.

Why it's here

This is one of the most comforting promises in Scripture. Your life is connected to His. As long as Jesus lives, and He lives forever, your life is secure.

Where it sits in the story

The world will look at the cross and see death. But the disciples will look beyond it and see life. Jesus' resurrection will not just prove He is alive; it will prove that everyone connected to Him will live too.

The scholarly reading

Jesus distinguishes between the world's perception (which will no longer see Him) and the disciples' experience (they will see Him). His life guarantees their life: 'because I live, you also will live.'

Language and setting

The 'seeing' (theōreite) promised to the disciples may refer to resurrection appearances and/or the spiritual sight granted by the Spirit. The connection between Christ's life and the believers' life is foundational to Johannine soteriology.

Jesus contrasts the world's blindness with the disciples' continued sight of Him.

Significance

Jesus draws a line between the world and the disciples. The world will lose sight of Him after the crucifixion, but the disciples will continue to see Him through resurrection encounters and the Spirit's illumination. His life becomes the guarantee of theirs.

17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.
