John 12:34, in plain English

The crowd is confused: if the Messiah is supposed to reign forever, why is Jesus talking about dying? They cannot square His words with what they have been taught.

Why it's here

The people knew their Scriptures well enough to know the Messiah was supposed to be eternal. What they couldn't see yet was that Jesus' death was the doorway to that eternal reign, not a contradiction of it.

You can feel their genuine puzzlement. They want to believe in Jesus, but His words about death don't fit the script they have been handed. The Messiah was supposed to stay forever, not be killed. They are asking the right question, but they are not ready for the answer.

The scholarly reading

The crowd objects by citing messianic expectation from 'the Law' (ho nomos, used broadly for Scripture) that the Christ (Messias) would remain forever (cf. Psalm 89:36, Isaiah 9:7, Daniel 7:14). They cannot reconcile an eternal Messiah with a dying Son of Man.

Language and setting

The tension between a suffering and a reigning Messiah was a genuine hermeneutical difficulty in Second Temple Judaism. The crowd's question reveals their inability to hold both truths together.

34The crowd replied, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever. So how can You say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

36While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.”
