On what were its foundations set, or who laid its cornerstone, Job 38:6 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Job 38:6, in plain English

God continues asking about the earth's construction—who set its foundations? Who placed the cornerstone that holds everything up?

Why it's here

These architectural images would have been deeply meaningful to Job's audience. A cornerstone is fundamental; it determines everything else. God is asking: Do you understand the absolute bedrock of how reality is structured?

Who's speaking

God speaking to Job

Where it sits in the story

The foundation of creation is a theme that runs through Scripture—God's work is stable, intentional, and built on principles Job doesn't grasp. It's a beautiful image of God's reliability even when Job feels like his own foundation has crumbled.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

God asks about the earth's foundations and cornerstone, using architectural metaphors to emphasize that creation rests on principles Job did not establish.

Language and setting

The phrase אָבֶן פִנָּה (even pinnah, cornerstone) is architecturally specific: it refers to the primary stone upon which the entire structure depends. This language appears in Isaiah 28:16 as a Messianic reference and later in 1 Peter 2:6. In Job's context, it functions literally — God is asking who laid the foundational stone that holds everything in place. The Talmudic sages debated whether this referred to a physical stone or metaphorically to God's wisdom as the sustaining principle. Rashi chose the latter interpretation: God's counsel itself is the cornerstone.

Voice

God, continuing the architectural metaphor to underscore divine craftsmanship.

Significance

The image prefigures the New Testament's use of cornerstone language for Christ as the foundation of the Church. Here, however, it speaks to the fundamental order of creation — the principle without which nothing coheres.
