God continues the almost poetic language of birth and motherhood, now applied to ice and frost. In a world without modern science, these phenomena would seem genuinely mysterious—water turns to stone-like substance, and no one knows how or why. Job, who has studied wisdom and lived carefully, has never solved this mystery.
God is speaking
The repeated use of birth language ('womb,' 'gives birth') is significant. God is positioning Himself as the source of life in all its forms, even its harsh forms like frost. This reframes how Job might think about suffering—not as an absence of God, but as another aspect of a creation that is far stranger and more complex than Job understood.
God continues the reproductive metaphor, asking whose womb produces ice and who brings forth frost—extending the biological paradigm to crystalline formations to further illustrate the absurdity of expecting Job to trace these origins.
The Hebrew בֶטֶן (beten, 'womb') and the verb יָלַד (yalad, 'to give birth') are radically incongruous when applied to ice formation—a deliberate category confusion that highlights how inadequate human reproductive categories are for comprehending celestial processes.
