Have you ever traveled to the deepest parts of the sea, explored its hidden vents and trenches where no human goes?
Job hasn't. No one in Job's time had. God is asking about places completely beyond human experience or knowledge. The deepest ocean remains mysterious and unreachable, yet God knows every part of it.

God is systematically showing Job that there are vast dimensions of creation—places, processes, realms of existence—that Job has never encountered and never will. Yet God sustains and knows them all. It's a humbling lesson about the limits of human knowledge.
God asks whether Job has explored the deepest regions of the sea, the vents where waters emerge and the profound trenches of the ocean.
The phrases שְׁפַךְ־הַיָּם (shefach ha-yam, vents or springs of the sea) and חֵקֶר תְּהוֹם (cheker t'hom, trenches or depths of the deep) refer to the most inaccessible regions of the ocean. Ancient Near Eastern texts, particularly the Akkadian flood myths, describe the 'abyss' or 'deep' (Tiamat in Babylonian tradition) as the primordial chaos beneath the world. The biblical text does not deny these regions' existence; rather, it emphasizes their inaccessibility to human knowledge. Job has never journeyed (הָלַכְתָּ, halacht) to these places — the verb emphasizes not mere passive ignorance but the active exploration that would be required. Modern scholars note that the ancient Hebrews had limited knowledge of deep-sea geography, so these questions functioned as rhetorical assertions of the unknowable.

The passage suggests that creation contains depths — literal and metaphorical — beyond human investigation. Job's demand for explanation presupposes a transparency to the cosmos that does not, in fact, exist. This anticipates the later theological tradition's emphasis on divine mystery.
