When light spreads, it's withheld from the wicked—they lose their power to hide and harm. Their defiant, upraised arm breaks under the exposure of light.
Throughout Scripture, God's justice isn't something He has to force—it's built into the structure of creation itself. Darkness and light, truth and deception, can't coexist. God is showing Job that His justice is woven into the very fabric of reality.

God reveals the moral consequence of dawn and light: the wicked are deprived of the light they desire, and their violent power is broken.
The verse introduces a moral counterpoint to the previous verses' celebration of creation's beauty. The wicked are characterized by יָדוֹ הַנִּשְׂגָּבָה (yado ha-nisgavah, their upraised arm) — the posture of violence or rebellion. The verb נִשְׁמַר (nishmarat, is withheld) applies to light as though it were deliberately reserved from the wicked. This is not merely physical deprivation but moral consequence: the light that reveals creation's order also exposes and undermines wickedness. The Psalms frequently employ similar imagery: 'For the wicked will not stand in the judgment' (Psalm 1:5). The technical term what scholars call 'retributive imagery' — the punishment fits the crime — appears here in cosmic form: the wicked who refuse to see (moral blindness) are deprived of light itself.

This begins to hint at how God's governance of creation includes moral accountability. For Job, this suggests that his suffering may relate to a cosmos in which divine justice is active, not absent — though the precise nature of that justice remains opaque.
