Because Jesus, our high priest, has ascended through the heavens and sits at God's right hand, we should hold firmly to the faith we profess, trusting in His completed work and intercession.

Language and setting

The author shifts from threat to comfort. Yes, the word penetrates and God sees all—but Christ is there in the heavens, not as a distant judge but as a compassionate high priest. The ascension (Jesus passing through the heavens) is not incidental but central: it means Christ has entered the presence of God with His completed sacrifice. For an audience fearing judgment, this is the fulcrum of hope. The priest intercedes for the people; Christ intercedes for us. 14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess.

15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.

16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
