What It Means

Genesis 42:15, in plain English

Joseph tells them the test: they can't leave Egypt unless they bring their youngest brother to him—and he's swearing by Pharaoh's life to make this binding.

Why it's here

By invoking Pharaoh's name, Joseph is making this an official, unbreakable command. It's not just a suggestion; it's a decree. He's asking them to do something that will require them to go back home, convince Jacob to give up Benjamin (who Jacob refused to let them bring), and return to Egypt.

Joseph establishes the condition for their release: one brother must return to Canaan to retrieve Benjamin, while the rest remain imprisoned—a test that will verify their truthfulness through action rather than mere assertion.

Language and setting

Joseph's oath formula 'As surely as Pharaoh lives' (*hai Paroh*) invokes the conventional Egyptian oath, embedding his demand within the authority structure of the state he serves. The demand for Benjamin effectively creates an impossible choice for the brothers: they must either return with Benjamin (potentially repeating their original betrayal by putting him in danger) or leave one of their own imprisoned. This is the crucible that will test whether they have matured morally since selling Joseph.

Significance
