Language and setting

Joseph's declaration 'Just as I said, you are spies!' (*zeh asher dibbarti alehem meraglim atem*) uses logical sleight of hand—the brothers have just provided exactly the kind of personal detail that a truthful person would provide, but Joseph interprets it as incrimination. This represents Joseph's control of the interpretive framework; he will dictate what the brothers' own words mean. The Reformation commentator Matthew Henry saw in this a demonstration of how the guilty conscience interprets everything as condemnation.

16Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be confined so that the truth of your words may be tested. If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies!”
