The Fall
“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” Genesis 3:11 · Berean Standard Bible
God asks who told him he was naked and then directly asks whether he ate from the forbidden tree.
God is pressing in with wisdom. He's not asking these questions because He doesn't know — He's asking because Adam needs to own it. The question about nakedness cuts to the heart: Adam's shame isn't about his body, it's about his disobedience.

God doesn't let sin hide. He pursues the conversation toward truth and accountability. Real restoration requires real honesty, and God won't settle for partial confession.
God presses further, asking who told him he was naked and whether he has eaten from the forbidden tree, moving from observation toward admission of guilt.
The twofold question is rhetorically sophisticated: 'Who told you that you were naked?' presupposes that the knowledge of nakedness came from an external source—namely, the transgression itself. By asking this, God leads the man to recognize that his shame is not natural but consequential. The second question, more directly interrogative, demands admission. God is not seeking information but extracting confession. This judicial procedure mirrors later covenant lawsuit (*rib*) patterns in prophetic literature, wherein God presents evidence and summons the defendant to answer.

This technique of progressive questioning establishes divine justice as fundamentally different from human vengeance: God seeks recognition of guilt and its causes, not merely punishment. This framework is crucial to understanding biblical atonement, which requires acknowledgment and repentance rather than mere forensic satisfaction.
9But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”
10“I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
11“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
12And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
