He's not lying, exactly, but he's also not telling the whole story. He acknowledges the fear and the hiding but doesn't yet confess the eating. He's partway to honesty — he's facing God but not fully opening up.

Adam shows what shame does: it makes you honest about your fear but evasive about your guilt. He's learned to hide, and even when caught, his instinct is still to minimize.

The scholarly reading

The man confesses his fear upon hearing God's voice and his awareness of his nakedness, which motivated his hiding.

Language and setting

The man's response invokes fear (*yare*), which in Scripture can denote either reverent awe or guilty terror. Here it is clearly the latter. Importantly, he connects his fear to his nakedness—he recognizes that his exposed state is incompatible with standing before God. This is the first articulation of what Protestant theology would later systematize as humanity's lost 'original righteousness' (*iustitia originalis*)—the covering of God's approval and presence that is now withdrawn. He has not yet blamed another or denied responsibility; his confession is straightforward acknowledgment of his condition.

Significance

His response contrasts with many biblical characters who prevaricate or deflect when confronted (Cain, for instance, responds evasively in Genesis 4:9). The man's initial candor sets up the expectation that he will accept accountability—a hope that verse 12 will shatter when he shifts blame.

8Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9But the LORD God called out to the man, “Where are you?”

10“I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”

11“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”

12And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
