God constructs a woman from the rib He removed from the human and presents her to him—an act of divine artistry creating a new creature from the human's own substance.

Language and setting

The verb בָּנָה (bana—'built' or 'constructed') appears here uniquely for human creation, contrasting with יָצַר (formed) in verse 7 and verse 21. Some medieval exegetes saw this as suggesting a more refined craftsmanship than mere molding. The presentation (וַיְבִאֶהָ—'and he brought her') uses the same verb as bringing animals to the human for naming, yet the parallel breaks: this bringing is to establish permanent union, not mere cataloging.

Significance

Woman's creation from human substance yet by divine agency establishes her as both fundamentally connected to and distinct from the human male. This becomes the foundation for Genesis 1:27's statement that both male and female bear the divine image equally.

20The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

21So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, and while he slept, He took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the area with flesh.
